Senator Jacinta Price predicts Country Liberal Party will oppose voice to parliament

Opposition leader Lia Finocchiaro didn’t want to commit on a voice to parliament, but CLP Senator Jacinta Price let the cat out of the bag. Read what she said.

The Territory’s conservative political party looks set to oppose a constitutional voice to parliament, despite their NSW and Tasmanian counterparts saying they’ll support the vote. Liberal Party NT Senator Jacinta Price said she predicted the party would unite behind her position opposing the voice to parliament, which appears set to go to a referendum vote later this year.

“I think you will find in the coming weeks that that is exactly the position they will hold,” Senator Price said Monday.

Earlier, Opposition Leader Lia Finocchiaro had declined to commit the party to a position, saying there were bigger issues at the moment including crime in Alice Springs.

“The voice is a federal issue and of course, every single Territorian will get their opportunity to vote just like Territory members of parliament will get their opportunity to vote,” Ms Finocchiaro said.

“I think we’ve got much bigger issues in the Territory right now than we do around worrying about the voice.

“Ultimately, the federal government has done no consultation in the Territory on the details around the voice and our position has been very clear. We want to make sure that Territorians understand what it is they’re voting for.

“It’s incumbent on the federal government to make sure that people know when it comes to that point in time to have the referendum people need to understand what it is they’re voting for.

“Senator Price has made her position very very clear and obviously at a Territory-wide level we have one vote just like everybody else.

“It’s not an issue of focus for us and ultimately, when you want to talk about voices, look at the track record of the Fyles Labor Government.”
