A post work trip to catch a feed turned into a moment of good fortune for a Darwin resident when he reeled in the 10th $10,000 barra of the new Million Dollar Fish season.

The lucky angler and Darwin resident, Mark Parkinson, reeled in the fish released by Major Events minister Marie-Clare Boothby on September 30 while at the Dinah Beach Boat Ramp.

Mr Parkinson went to the ramp thinking he would catch a fish to cook up, but the 70cm barra he caught on October 8 was worth a lot more.

Mark’s catch is the 10th fish to be caught in just over a week following a huge start to the season, and leaves 89 fish worth $10,000 and 10 worth $1m still in the wild.

“Unlucky fish and lucky me. I just went to Dinah Beach after work,” Mr Parkinson said.

“I heard a bit of bait movement and what sounded like boof so I went around there, and fourth cast (I hooked it).”

Each season the competition sees red-tagged fish released in Darwin, Katherine, Arnhem Land, Kakadu and Tiwi Islands waterways.

As the official charity partner, Cancer Council NT receives $1000 for every $10,000 tagged fish caught, bringing the total contribution to the charity to $10,000 so far.

NT Major Events Company acting chief executive Trevor Cox said it had been an incredible start to the season considering 10 fish had been hooked in just eight days.

“There’s nothing like fishing in the NT, and nothing like trying to snag yourself a red tag worth either $10k or even a million dollars, so book your trip and you could become a millionaire,” he said.

“Million Dollar Fish shows the NT is the best place in the world to play, stay and fish and this week proves it.

“People from all over the world are lured to the Territory to wet a line and try their luck, providing a significant boost to our tourism industry and local businesses.”

“It’s been an incredibly exciting time to be a part of the competition,” Mr Bors said.

With just a week of the competition down, Sportsbet can’t wait to see more lucky fishos win big in Australia’s richest fishing competition.”
