RESIDENTS of the Litchfield Municipality with babies and toddlers can get a helping hand to swap from disposable nappies to reusable ones through a council scheme.

The rebate also applies for the purchasing of reusable sanitary items.

The new initiative is to encourage the reduction of waste going into landfill through the Going Green Rebate program.

Residents living in the Litchfield Municipality can apply for either one or both of the rebates up to $150.

People can claim $100 for cloth nappies and $50 for reusable sanitary items.

Under the eligibility criteria Litchfield Council will accept only one application for each rebate per household with successful applicants reimbursed for 50 per cent of the purchase price of eligible products up to the value of $150.

The rebate is on a first in first served basis, until the funds are exhausted.

Each day 3.75 million disposable nappies are used in Australia and New Zealand, with disposable nappies taking up to 150 years to break down in landfill.

The council has allocated $5000 for this financial year, and if successful it could be expanded in the next Municipal Plan process.

Mayor Maree Bredhauer said she was hopeful the scheme would take off as it had been successful in other places around Australia.

“The Going Green Rebate has proved popular in other states, and it is great to pioneer this program here,” Ms Bredhauer said.

“The rebate is aimed at reducing landfill by encouraging residents to purchase cloth nappies and reusable sanitary items.

Residents can claim the rebate now with people able to jump online to complete the process.

Residents of Litchfield just have to prove they live in the council area and show proof of purchase with their name on it.

This can include a receipt from the shop it was bought from and an accompanying bank statement.
