Overpass to improve safety at notorious intersection

CONSTRUCTION of an overpass at the notorious Tiger Brennan Drive and Berrimah Road intersection will be completed by the end of 2022, with funding for $61.5 million project to be split between the NT government and the Commonwealth.
Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Minister Eva Lawler announced the project would go ahead with a tender for construction to be released this week.
The overpass will improve the safety of the intersection, where several horrific accidents have occurred.
“This intersection is our busiest intersection, 20,000 Territorians a day go through this intersection,” she said.
“We have seen some terrible accidents at this intersection. We’ve seen Territorians pass away, we’ve seen injuries, we’ve seen countless accidents at this intersection. We lowered the speed limit, we put in red light cameras, we’ve put in speed cameras as well, but we’ll continue to see Territorians speed through this intersection.
“It is a dangerous intersection, a busy intersection so when the federal government came forward with the $97 million to upgrade road safety, it became apparent that this was a project that we had on the planning board.

“It’ll be 50/50 between the Northern Territory government and the federal government, so the Northern Territory’s commitment is over $30 million.”
NT Senator Sam McMahon said the project was critical for safety.
“There have been Territorians killed here at this intersection, so it’s very important that we do something to make the road safer,” she said.
“(It’s) going to make it a far, far safer journey for the 20,000 vehicles that come through here every single day.”
