A PLAN to create an overpass over a notorious Top End intersection has been backed by the NT’s peak road safety authority, the Automobile Association of the Northern Territory.

AANT chief executive Anthony Hill said the $60m proposal for the Tiger Brennan Dr/Berrimah Rd intersection, which the Gunner Government is starting preparatory work on, was an idea he had supported for years.

Mr Hill said it was important to have an overpass, particularly adjoining a major industrial area where trucks and a significant number of vehicles passed through.

“From a traffic flow but also a risk perspective, it reduces the risk of accidents,” he said.

Mr Hill said similar infrastructure at a number of intersections would be beneficial, but the Berrimah Road one was a priority.

“This one now is the immediate, where we’ve had most issues.

“I think future funding should also be focused on other major intersections along Tiger Brennan Dr for an overpass.”
