NT Police have arrested a youth who allegedly broke into the Todd quarantine facility in Alice Springs on Sunday and stole the wallet of a man undertaking mandatory supervised quarantine.

In addition to the charges relating to the unlawful entry and theft, the youth has also been charged with assaulting police and criminal damage.

Police said the man undertaking quarantine noticed a series of unauthorised transactions on his credit card at two locations before discovering his wallet was missing.

“The man’s credit card was used at two locations, one in the Gap and the other in the Alice Springs CBD on Sunday August 29,” Incident Controller Hege Burns said.

Police said investigators from Strike Force Viper took carriage of the investigation and public health officials assessed the possible risk to the community.

Investigators believe the youth had a brief conversation with one other resident while at the facility.

Public health official administered rapid Covid-19 tests to both residents at the quarantine facility, which returned negative results. Both had previously tested negative on their arrival.

Using these results and the recent negative wastewater results in Alice Springs, public health officials determined risk to the public as “very low”.

The youth was located and arrested just after midday on Sunday.

Police said a review of the current security measures at the facility is being undertaken.

“A breach such as this is rare and security arrangements have been adequate to date,” a police spokesman said.
