THERE has been a death in custody at Holtze Prison in Darwin’s rural area.

Police say the man, 31, was found unresponsive in his cell by correctional officers at around 8am Monday.

They said medical assistance was provided but the man was declared deceased at the scene.

St John Ambulance said one of its crews attended the jail just before 8:30am on Monday, but the man was already deceased when they arrived.

News of the death in custody emerged when a judge at the Darwin Local Court advised those present that all matters involving in-custody video links from the prison had been postponed because of a death in custody.

The death is not being treated as suspicious.

There are more than 1,100 inmates at the facility at Holtze in Darwin’s rural area.

All deaths in custody are reported to the Northern Territory coroner for examination.
