Lieutenant William Devenyns reflects on service ahead of Anzac Day

A Top End family with generations of military service will be among thousands of Territorians commemorating Anzac Day. Read about their heartwarming pride.

Zach Devenyns is proud of his father’s service in the Royal Australian Navy, and always looks forward to giving him a “big cuddle” when he returns from sea.

“Anzac Day is about the people who died and the people who serve us now around the world, like Daddy,” the five-year-old said.

Twin brother Ben and nine-year-old brother Alex gazed up at their father with admiration as he told the story of his journey in the Australian Defence Force.

Lieutenant William Devenyns – the ADV Cape Naturaliste Navigation Officer – said service was, by definition, about putting others before yourself.

“Anzac Day for me is about acknowledging and honouring the service, courage and sacrifice of our current and especially our former service men and women, who have served and died in all conflicts, and our allies who have served alongside them,” he said.

Lieutenant Devenyns’ family has a history of military service – great-grandfather William Barlett served in World War I, and grandfather William Crowe served in the army during Word War II as part of the 2/10 Field Regiment.

He said he was proud of his family’s history of service but said his own reason for joining the ranks of the navy was to chase a fulfilling career.

Partner Tessa said the former landscaper had mentioned joining the defence force “a few times” before taking the leap.

“He’s very dedicated, he’s very loyal – whatever he decides to do, he does it and he does it well,” she said.

“He just always seemed like a good fit for defence.”

Lieutenant Devenyns is likely to spend Anzac Day at sea supporting Operation Resolute and protecting Australia’s borders.

Several Dawn Services and Anzac Day parades will take place across the NT on April 25.

Service attendees in Darwin and Nhulunbuy could expect a little bit of rain, with long-term forecasts predicting a few clouds, light winds, and the chance of storms.

Katherine, Dundee Beach, and Adelaide River could also experience a few showers throughout the day.

Alice Springs will likely remain dry throughout the day, as well as Tennant Creek.
