Detectives seek witnesses to Alice Springs pedestrian death

Police say a 59-year-old man is assisting with their inquiries after the 48-year-old woman was killed on Monday night.

Detectives from NT Police’s major crash investigation unit are probing a fatal crash in Alice Springs following the death of a woman on Monday night.

Watch Commander Andrew Dunne said officers received a report the 48-year-old had been struck by a vehicle travelling inbound on Gap Road, near Alice Springs hospital at about 9pm.

Emergency services arrived at the scene soon after and took the female to Alice Springs hospital, where she died a short time later.

Gap Road was reportedly closed between Traeger Ave and the emergency department due to the incident and the road was still blocked by two police vehicles on Gap Rd near the Shell service station by the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Senior Sergeant Dunne said a 59-year-old man who came forward after the incident was assisting police with their inquiries but said it appeared neither speed nor alcohol intake had played a role in the incident.

Police are appealing for assistance from motorists in or around Gap Road around 9pm on Monday evening who either saw the pedestrian on or crossing Gap Road or who may have dashcam footage of the area at the time.
