New Gold Coast MP concerned by border workers lack of safety equipment

Concerns have been raised about police working at border checkpoints because they’re not using one important safety item. But authorities insist it’s there if needed.

NEW Currumbin MP Laura Gerber has raised concerns frontline workers at the state borders are not being provided with or using appropriate safety equipment such as masks, but authorities say there is plenty available for those who need it.

Ms Gerber said some constituents were concerned that police at the border were not being protected by masks or face shields.

However police have rejected the suggestion.

WHERE TO FIND FACE MASKS ON COAST

“The Palaszczuk Labor Government needs to explain how it is keeping frontline workers and volunteers safe at our border checkpoints, when they are not wearing face masks,” Ms Gerber said.

“Our police are checking documents at the border, in close proximately with members of the public, placing them at risk should interstate travellers exposed to COVID-19 present at our borders.”

Chief Superintendent Mark Wheeler told the Bulletin any suggestion that police weren’t being provided with PPE was “incorrect”.

“All necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) has been made available to all personnel working at police checkpoints,” a police media statement said.

It is understood officers are required to wear masks when they deem it appropriate.
