GRIFFITH University student Crystal Fox believes masks could become a fashion statement in the fight against coronavirus.
“It’s what you have to do, you don’t really have a choice,” the 19-year-old said. “You have to remember it helps you and the community.

“I can’t believe that people are so against it.
“It’s the smallest thing to do, to wear a mask. I think we can embrace them, even use them as a fashion statement. It’s about protecting your health and everyone in the community.”

Those looking to buy a cloth or fabric mask for general use can find a huge variety online. Cloth masks are available in many pharmacies and variety stores, but there are limits on medical masks.
Cloth masks have been found to limit the transmission of respiratory droplets carrying the disease, but social distancing and regular handwashing measures are a must.

What to look for
The World Health Organisation recommends a three-layer face mask, if made from cloth or fabric.
1. The inner layer should be made of cotton to absorb droplets.
2. The outer layer should be made of polyester or nylon to resist aerosol and water droplets.
3. The inner layer can be made of blends.
4. Regular washing in hot water and soap is needed.
5. Wearers should consider a snug fit over the nose and mouth.
6. Don’t touch the front of the mask when removing.
