A PICTURESQUE town in the state’s North-West is this year’s Keep Australia Beautiful Tidy Town.
Wilmot was today announced as the 2019 winner at a ceremony in Oatlands, last year’s Tidy Town winner.
“Wilmot’s can-do attitude and the generous and optimistic outlook of the people who
live there truly capture the spirit of the Tidy Towns program,” judge Lesley Gardner said.
“More than 80 novelty letterboxes provide a humorous and unusual attraction and the Street Library is a wonderful way to share a love of reading and make new friends.”
Ms Gardner, who was judging the awards for the fifth time, also said the Wilmot Museum was a treasure trove honouring the region’s history, and Weindorfer Memorial Event honoured the vision of not only Gustav and Kate Weindorfer — whose efforts led to the creation of the Cradle Mountain World Heritage National Park — and the conservation of Cradle Mountain/Lake St Clair, but also the dedication of the North-West Walking Club.
“The new committee want every Australian to know the wonderful story of the Weindorfers and their declaration that the Cradle Mountain wilderness should be for all people, for all time,” Ms Gardner said.
Launceston won the Sustainable Cities award, and the Clean Beach Award was presented to the Great Eastern Clean up in Glamorgan Spring Bay. Ross, Bridport, Penguin and Wynyard were also recognised in the population categories.
The Community Citizen of the Year award was presented to Huon Valley Council community engagement officer Lisa Plohl, who was instrumental in setting up and running the animal refuge centre at Ranelagh Showgrounds during last summer’s bushfires.
Mount Stuart Primary School received the youth leadership award for the work of its student representative council and war on waste team.
