Australia ‘does not need more politicians’ says former Vic Liberal president

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Opposition leader Peter Dutton have suffered a drop in support by Aussie voters as they received the lowest approval since the election, according to the latest Newspoll results.

The results have the government leading the coalition 56 to 44, two-party preferred, with Labor’s lead increasing one point since the last survey

According to The Australian, Labor has widened the two-party preferred from 55-45 to 56-44, although Labor and the Coalition are unchanged on the primary vote at 38 per cent and 33 per cent respectively, with the Greens up one to 11 per cent and One Nation down one to 7 per cent.

Opposition Leader Mr Dutton has also seen his support fall to its lowest level since he took on the role, as his net satisfaction rating dropped six points to minus 19, while Mr Albanese’s satisfaction rating also took a dive, going from 21 to 16.

The poll — which was conducted Wednesday to Saturday from a sample of 1514 — also saw Mr Albanese’s lead as preferred prime minister narrow slightly from 58-26 to 54-28.

Meanwhile, support for other minor parties and independents remains unchanged from the last Newspoll on April 2 at 11 per cent.

The latest Newspoll results is the first to test the party mood since Mr Dutton formalised the Liberal party’s opposition to the Voice referendum, which has dominated the political contest in Canberra over the past three weeks.

The drop in both Mr Albanese and Mr Dutton’s satisfaction with their performance by voters come as the pair battle over whether the nation enshrines an indigenous voice to parliament and executive government.

The only good news for Mr Dutton was an improvement in the head-to-head contest over who voters regard as making the better prime minister.
