Welcome to our live coverage of election night.

The count is well underway and Anthony Albanese looks to be in pole position to win, mirroring the majority of polls in recent days.

The bookies mark him as the strong favourite and odds for Peter Dutton’s chances of victory have dramatically collapsed.

The Opposition leader earlier said he remained “absolutely” confident he would triumph, thanks to the votes of millions of “quiet” Australians.

A final Newspoll revealed Mr Albanese faces the prospect of minority rule amid a historic slump in votes for the major parties.

It said the combined primary vote of the major parties had fallen to a record low, with support for both the Prime Minister and Mr Dutton declining in their final week of campaigning.

But we shall see. It is never entirely clear what will happen until the votes are tallied.
