THE homeless mother of a baby girl allegedly tossed into the Tweed River and found washed up dead on Surfers Paradise beach believed the girl was “the wicked one” and “the devil” incarnate who deserved to die, police documents allege.
The woman, 23, who faced Tweed Heads Local Court today charged over the nine-month-old baby’s death, believed she was “Mary the mother of Jesus” and her accused killer partner, 48, “the son of God”, documents tendered to the court claim.
Police found a bizarre diary in which the woman allegedly wrote she was “not there when the baby was sleighed (sic). It was not for me to know or my burden to share”, the court documents state.
“Though (sic) shalt not murder in his command but [her partner] is the law himself, he is the word and the son of gd. He had the right to sleigh the wicked one for all nations sake.
“He did what had to be done, hallelujah to the loving son.”
The mother also allegedly wrote that her partner was innocent “for he did slay the one you call the devil”.
“She/he was hiding in an infant child, abomination he/she is she thought he could escape judgement ...”
The woman has been granted bail despite police objections following her arrest last Thursday after investigations by NSW detectives from Strike Force Palua, set up to probe the baby’s death.
The woman, whose name has been suppressed, was extradited to NSW on Thursday afternoon and appeared in Byron Bay Local Court via video link last Friday charged with failing to provide for her child and causing danger of death.
Today, she appeared via video link from Grafton Jail in Tweed Heads Local Court where her lawyer applied for bail.
The prosecutor opposed bail being granted, saying police feared she could commit further crimes and interfere with witnesses and evidence.
The woman also had no fixed place of address, the prosecutor told the court.
However, magistrate Jeff Linden granted her bail on condition she live in a supervised residential facility, report daily to police, and not contact witnesses or go near Tweed Heads except to attend court.
Late-night beach walkers found the naked baby washed up on Surfers Paradise beach about 12.30am on November 19, two days after she was allegedly thrown into the Tweed River, about 30km south.
The parents, the baby and a two-year-old son were homeless and living in parks up and down the Gold Coast.
They were well known to authorities and the baby’s death has sparked a top-level investigation into how Child Safety officials allowed the young children to be living on the streets.
Court documents reveal the woman has formally entered a plea of not guilty. The case has been adjourned until February 25.
