Hollywood superstar Matt Damon has revealed he recently contracted the Delta variant of Covid-19, and said it was “no picnic”.
Despite being fully vaccinated, the New York based A-list star of the Bourne franchise and The Martian said he did it tough after coming down with a breakthrough case of the highly contagious coronavirus strain that continues to ravage the world.
“The Delta variant, I had a breakthrough case myself, and it was no picnic even with the vaccine but at least it keeps you able to handle it in your house and to isolate and get on with life and I am incredibly grateful for that,” Damon said while promoting his new historical drama The Last Duel, which he co-wrote with long-time friend Ben Affleck.
Don’t freak out: Catching Covid after you are vaccinated improves immunity
Damon said that while he accepted vaccinations were a choice, he was thankful for his decision to get the jab based on medical research that suggests they are the best path out of the pandemic.
“It’s something we are going to be living with – it’s not going away,” he said. “I know it’s a personal decision for people but I definitely choose science as my guide here.”
Earlier this year, Damon spent five months in Australia with his family after being given special dispensation to enter the country to film a part in good friend Chris Hemsworth’s superhero film Thor: Love and Thunder. They returned to the US in late June after spending time in Sydney, Queensland and the Byron Bay area, where Hemsworth also lives, and just missed the lockdown of regional New South Wales.
“I couldn’t believe we got out when we did and all of our friends there, we have been in constant contact with them and hearing about how brutal (the lockdowns) have been and I’m really sorry,” he said. “We really got the best of it and then got out. That wasn’t the intention – we weren’t trying to leave you guys holding the bag but apparently we did. I wish you guys luck.”
