Those looking to buy a cloth or fabric mask for general use can find a huge variety online. Cloth masks are available in many pharmacies and variety stores, but there are limits on medical masks.

Cloth masks have been found to limit the transmission of respiratory droplets carrying the disease, but social distancing and regular handwashing measures are a must.

Where to get them

Target: Cloth masks $9.

Kmart: Disposable 3-ply pack of 10, $10.

Chemist Warehouse: Reusable fabric mask $14.99.

Priceline: Kn95-disposable medical grade 10 pack, $51.99.

BIG W: Disposable face mask 10 pack, $20.

Boohoo: Fabric reusable mask, $6-20.

ASOS: Fabric reusable 3 pack, $28.

What to look for

The World Health Organisation recommends a three-layer face mask, if made from cloth or fabric.

1. The inner layer should be made of cotton to absorb droplets.

2. The outer layer should be made of polyester or nylon to resist aerosol and water droplets.

3. The inner layer can be made of blends.

4. Regular washing in hot water and soap is needed.

5. Wearers should consider a snug fit over the nose and mouth.

6. Don’t touch the front of the mask when removing.
