Police have been praised after they charged a man with stealing a dog from outside a supermarket in Sydney on the weekend.
The 10-year-old Jack Russell, Jake, disappeared from outside the supermarket in Crinan St in Hurlstone Park just before 5pm on Saturday, NSW Police said in a statement today. His owner, 51, called Burwood Police, who commenced a search for the dog.
After inquiries, officers went to a home on George St in Sydenham about 7.30pm last night, where Jake was found. The residence was some five kilometres from where he’d disappeared.
Police said Jake has since been reunited with his owner.
A man, 53, was given a Court Attendance Notice for allegedly stealing the dog, and is due to appear at Burwood Local Court on October 5.
A post about Jake’s rescue by the NSW Police quickly went viral on Facebook this afternoon, attracting more than 2000 reactions and 200 comments in just over two hours.
“Fantastic outcome! Great work,” one woman commented.
“I’m so happy he was found. Can the people blaming the owner for securing their dog to a pole whilst in a shop, stop,” another said. “It’s the thieves who steal from others that should stop!!”
“Why do people steal people’s dogs? I just don’t get it. Nice work getting this goodboi home,” another said.
“Thank you guys,” another said using the prayer hands emoji. “Sweet post.”
