“Usually, they’re just there for a couple of days. Sometimes it might just be people camping out while they’re looking for a place to rent.”

A Cairns Regional Council spokesman said the council had received no report of any illegal camping taking place at the park and the tent was gone when an officer went to check.

Camping is prohibited on council-controlled lands, including public parks, roadsides, The Esplanade, cemeteries, public parks, car parks, sporting grounds, drainage reserves and beaches. It can result in a $266 on-the-spot fine.
