‘Most poorly designed bit of roadwork’: Multi-vehicle crash caught on dashcam on ‘notorious’ Gold Coast intersection

New dashcam video has emerged of yet another accident at one of the Gold Coast’s most notorious M1 exits.

Dashcam video has emerged showing a crash involving two vehicles at one of the northern Gold Coast’s most notorious M1 intersections.

The video, shared to the Dashcam Owners Australia Facebook page, shows a white SUV driving through lights at Exit 57 between Oxenford and Hope Island Rd and crashing into a Toyota Corolla.

The Carolla driver, who was turning right from Hope Island Rd onto Dreamworld Parkway, honked their horn to alert the vehicle and appeared to slow down before ultimately getting “T-boned”.

The caption read: “Corolla written off, but it saved me from serious injury.”

The post which received 1300 comments and 508,000 views as of writing – included locals criticising the notorious crash hotspot.

Scott Crobett called it an “infamous intersection” while Michelle Egan wrote: “See it all the time at that intersection.”

Tiara Wall commented: “I know this intersection very well, and I look at every entry point before I even enter this intersection every time, because so many people run reds or speed through them and they are flying up that off ramp from the M1.

“ … when you’re behind the wheel, youre (sic) checking every thing else around you as well ... you can’t drive with tunnel vision on the GC.”

Heath Worrall wrote: “I’ve seen so many people run reds at exit 57, I always wait after light changes.”

Gerry Carney wrote: “Exit 57 is the most poorly designed bit of roadwork ever inflicted on motorists”.

Controversy about the exit became a hot topic in the state election in 2020, with the LNP pledging to build a $120m upgrade involving flyovers and bypasses if it won government on October 31.

Local MP Mark Boothman said the government is delivering on its election commitment by funding advanced planning works for an additional bridge across the M1 Motorway at Coomera.

“Delivery of the Coomera Connector will also provide relief on the pressure of Exit 57 by bypassing the need to use M1 Motorway interchanges like Exit 57.

“This is about giving motorists the alternatives they have been asking for.”
