Horrific footage of police shooting a kangaroo in the suburbs of Melbourne has emerged.
The distressing incident, shared to social media on 23 Sunday, was filmed by Australian mum Sarah Moec.
The clip shows a kangaroo lying on the ground as a police officer approaches it with their gun in hand.
The sound of a shot rings out through the neighbourhood before the native animal tragically goes limp.
The 31-year-old mum then pans to her three young children watching out the window as they declare,
“It’s dead!”
The clip has gathered over 30,000 views online in just 24 hours and is captioned ‘POV: your kids are watching the cops save a kangaroo but witness this instead’.
Many in the comments were quick to express their concern with one user saying, “Wow in a public place that is crazy. Especially when kids can see this. I’m actually shocked.”
Others echoed those sentiments saying, “Sadly no different to animals in the slaughterhouse” and “Poor roo and poor kids”.
The NSW Office of Environment and Heritage states that “Fauna must be euthanised when death is imminent or highly likely regardless of the treatment provided; or it is suffering from chronic pain; or it has lost its ability to locomote normally.”
Many noted that the animal was already lying on the ground and appeared badly injured.
“It was down already so it must have been severely injured”, one said.
“This is completely normal. They have to put them out of pain. They cannot be fixed if they break a leg or tail. It’s the kindest thing”, another agreed.
“We have to call the police to ‘deal with’ injured roos all the time. Unfortunately this is normal and necessary”, said another.
