A man has been charged after dozens of kangaroos were found shot on an Australian military base.

A man has been hit with a string of charges after allegedly shooting dozens of kangaroos dead on a military base in the NSW Hunter region.

Police allegedly found the remains of 98 kangaroos scattered in an around Singleton’s School of Infantry training base, where soldiers receive weapons training, in October.

An ammunition box and two cartridges were also allegedly discovered by police.

In a statement on Monday, NSW Police said a man, 43, has been arrested following a search warrant being executed at a property in Williamtown, located between Newcastle and Nelson Bay.

Officers allegedly seized three different firearms from the property.

The man has been charged with six offences – including aggravated cruelty upon an animal, discharge of a firearm upon Commonwealth land, trespass onto Commonwealth land, not keeping a firearm safely, harming a protected animal and failing to meet firearm licence storage requirements.

“Police have since seized a number of firearms from a second Hunter region property,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“A Firearms Suspension Notice has been issued.”

The man will front Raymond Terrace Local Court on January 13.
