ONE of Australia’s longest-running Aboriginal Health Services in Central Australia has come out of special administration after measures were put in place to deal with staff safety concerns.

The Urapuntja Health Service Aboriginal Corporation went under special administration in January following reports of threats of violence against staff.

The clinic came out of special care on Friday after administrators consulted the community and engaged security to safeguard staff during ordinary and emergency on-call services.

New chief executive Wendy Edmondson said despite also facing challenges from coronavirus, the clinic continued to deliver services to its clients under a unique model of care.

“This involved nurses visiting 15 homelands on rotation. This is … not offered by any other health service,” she said.

As the oldest registered Aboriginal corporation in Australia, Urapuntja Health provides vital healthcare for about 1000 indigenous people across the Utopia homelands region.

“Urapuntja operates in one of the most challenging environments and yet it’s survived for over 40 years,” Ms Edmondson said. “We’re excited for the future.”

LIMITED TIME: Centralian Advocate digital subscription offer: $1 a week for first 12 weeks

The health service is also in a stable financial position, with money in the bank outweighing the total liabilities
