A Gold Coast woman hopes to don the green and gold in one of the world’s biggest street dancing competitions.
Hanon Taira, 22, from Ashmore will compete at the Red Bull Dance Your Style National Final in Sydney on July 26.
The winner will head to Los Angeles in October to compete at the Red Bull Dance Your Style World Final against dancers from more than 50 countries.
Taira has been dancing since she was 10 years old and taught herself street-style moves by watching music videos online.
“I tried to look for (street-style) classes around my area but it was all jazz and commercial so I couldn’t learn,” she said.
“When I was 14, a studio opened nearby and I started to learn different styles of street dancing and then I found krump, which is my style now.”
Krump is a type of dance culture that evolved through African-American street dancing and became popular in the early 2000s.
“What I love about dancing is that you can express yourself in your own way,” Taira said.
The competition is one-vs-one and purely freestyle, meaning no pre-planned choreography, and the audience gets to decide the winner.
Taira said it would “mean a lot” to represent Australia at the World Final in Los Angeles.
“I want the world to know that we have highly skilled dancers here because our dance community isn’t as known around the world,” she said.
“I want them to know that we have our own style and culture and I’d love to represent my home country.”
