Rescue unfolds at The Spit on the Gold Coast

A swimmer who died after being pulled from the surf in a dramatic beach rescue on the Gold Coast has been identified as a 22-year-old Brisbane man.

A swimmer who died after being pulled from the surf in a dramatic beach rescue on the Gold Coast has been identified as a 22-year-old New Farm man.

Emergency services were called to Seaworld Dr, Main Beach, about 4pm Thursday.

A police spokeswoman said three men were reported to be struggling in the water at Main Beach.

Two men in their 20s managed to get themselves out of the water and were taken in a stable condition to Gold Coast University Hospital.

A third man – the 22-year-old from the Brisbane suburb of New Farm – was found unresponsive in the water after he was initially reported as missing.

He was pulled from the water and CPR was commenced.

The man was unable to be revived and died at the scene.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

The death is not being treated as suspicious.

The tragedy was witnessed by onlookers including the man’s friends on the beach.

The incident happened at The Spit, Main Beach, about 500m from the Gold Coast Seaway sand pumping jetty.
