Updated: Police are investigating whether a horror two-car smash on the M1 at Bilinga on Friday night, which resulted in a heavily pregnant women being cut from her vehicle and induced into early labour, was caused by an illegal street race.

About 11.40pm on July 25, a black Mitsubishi Lancer and a silver Holden Commodore were travelling southbound along the M1 when the Mitsubishi struck the back end of a black Hyundai i20, police said in a statement on Saturday.

The Hyundai and Mitsubishi both lost control and hit the side rail before coming to a stop and blocking both southbound lanes.

The passenger in the i20, a 25-year-old Currumbin Waters woman, was transported to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious but stable condition, while the Mitsubishi driver, an 18-year-old New South Wales man, was also transported to the GCUH with minor injuries.

The driver of the Holden, a 20-year-old Merrimac woman, was not physically injured.

On Monday, Acting Superintendent Michelle Piket said police were probing whether the Mitsubishi and Holden were engaged in an illegal street race when the i20 was struck.

“Two vehicles were believed to be racing each other [and] one of those vehicles has attempted to change lanes and has collided with the rear of another vehicle,” she said.

The Currumbin Waters woman, who was 38 weeks pregnant, had to be cut from the i20 and was subsequently induced into labour by concerned medicos, Superintendent Piket revealed.

“[The crash victim] has had the baby and I believe they’ve been transferred to Brisbane for specialist treatment,” she added.

No charges have been laid in relation to the crash.

Police continue to urge anyone with relevant dashcam or CCTV footage to make contact.

Sunday, July 27: Police are investigating a serious traffic crash in Bilinga on Friday night involving a black Mitsubishi Lancer and a silver Holden Commodore.

The Mitsubishi and Holden Commodore were travelling southbound along the Pacific Highway when the Mitsubishi struck the back end of a black Hyundai i20 around 11.40pm.

The Hyundai and Mitsubishi both lost control and hit the side rail before coming to a stop and blocking both southbound lanes.

The Holden Commodore was not damaged and the driver, a 20-year-old Merrimac woman, was not physically injured.

The passenger in the Hyundai, a 25-year-old Currumbin Waters woman, was transported to Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

The driver of the Mitsubishi, an 18-year-old man from NSW, was also taken to Gold Coast University Hospital with minor injuries.

The Forensic Crash Unit are investigating the incident.

Police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have dashcam or CCTV footage from the area around the time of the crash, to come forward.
