Hundreds of people streamed through the doors when the Gold Coast’s first Costco outlet opened to the public this morning.

The $75m, 14,346 sqm shopping centre opened its doors for the first time on Thursday morning after almost a year of construction.

There were cheers when Costco Australia and New Zealand Managing Director Patrick Noone cut the ribbon to officially open the Coomera outlet at 7.45am.

Dozens of people have waited in line ahead of the opening of the Gold Coast’s new Costco store in Coomera.

First in line were Julie Lowe and her daughter Stacey from Burleigh Waters, who had arrived at the store at 3.30am.

“I’m used to 3.30 starts, I do Carrara markets where I sell crystals, bracelets and clothes,” Ms Lowe said.

“So I’m always first in line.

“I buy in bulk because I’ve got a family of seven.

“Costco’s going to really help us.”

Sana Chaaban from Hope Island said the opening of the new store was something she had long been hoping for.

“I’m very happy,” Ms Chaaban said.

“When I came from Sydney five years ago I sent a message to Costco on Facebook. I said please open in Coomera. My dream has come true.”

Tino Matamua from Park Lakes, who was at the store with her daughter Faith, said they were “very excited” to have a new store open closer to their home than existing Costco outlets.

“It’s fantastic. We come down this way a bit,” Ms Matamua said.

“We’ll stock our cupboards up. It’s so convenient.”

Tabetha Gibson from Surfers Paradise, who was one of the first people through the check-outs at Coomera, said the new store would be “much easier” to get to than existing outlets in North Lakes and Ipswich.

“It’s great. We have eight in our family,” she said. “I’m going to a playgroup this morning and stocking up on snacks.”

On Tuesday prior to opening, The Bulletin was taken on an exclusive tour through the facility.

Shoppers can find 93 inch teddies, 4.5kg bars of Toblerone, coffins and a $99,999 diamond ring among a large range of products for sale.

Among those to snap up some of the Toblerones, as well as other items, were Kerrie and Krystle Holzberger from Oxenford.

“We’re very excited. We’ve been waiting years for this,” they said.

Costco Australia & New Zealand Managing Director Patrick Noone said he was delighted with how the morning had gone.

“The builders did a good job. We’re just tweaking a few things to make sure people flow properly though us. But very happy to see this crowd here today,” Mr Noone said.

“(Customers are) very excited. They love the convenience of coming to the Gold Coast, because they used to shop in other places, Ipswich or North Lakes.

“And we’ve got a lot of new members as well.”
