WTF: Punters look to make a quick buck from Cats’ white night wipe-out

A debate more interesting than the lopsided clash at the Cattery on Friday night has emerged after some entrepreneurial attendees went online to make a quick buck.

This week's WTF has a bit of everything.
This week's WTF has a bit of everything.

They’re the little – and sometimes not so little – things that can really irk us … and they’re back! A new slot, on a new page with the same old problems that have us all saying, woah, that’s frustrating!

WHITE NIGHT SELLOUT

Such entrepreneurship should be commended.
Such entrepreneurship should be commended.

Some may see it as a cunning act of entrepreneurship, while others may shake their head at the attempt to profit from a product that came at no charge.

Either way, the debate is more interesting than the lopsided clash at the Cattery on Friday night.

Following in the footsteps of big American sporting teams, the Cats – or Cotton On more accurately – gave a free T-shirt to every attendee at Friday night’s game against reigning premiers Brisbane.

While the jury is still out on the success of the “white out” that coincided with Patrick Dangerfield’s 350th game, keen punters moved quickly to make a quick buck.

Multiple listings popped up on Facebook Marketplace over the weekend, most around the $50 mark.

If you’re after your slice of history, you’re in luck, because it appears they aren’t exactly rushing off the shelf.

NOT SO CHARITABLE

It looks like a messy teenager’s bedroom has spilt onto Melbourne Rd in Rippleside of late as charity bin divers check out donations, then dump and run.

And just like at home with an untidy adolescent, the jumble of rubbish opposite North Geelong train station is cleared away regularly – and then items are dragged out and tossed aside again.

The situation’s not helped by the fact that charity donors don’t seem to grasp the meaning of “recycle your clothing” clearly printed on the bins – or the accompanying illustrations to help out.

In recent weeks, a car seat, a stack of crockery, baskets, a plastic pipe and even a shopping trolley have littered the footpath among piles of discarded clothing surrounding the bins.

“I feel sorry for the unfortunate workers that diligently remove the junk each week and then return days later to see it’s a shemozzle again,” one disgusted local mused.

“Not sure that the charity is getting much value from its bin, especially when the clothing that’s pulled out and dumped ends up being soaked by rain.”

Time for the bin divers to clean up their act.

HITCHIN’ A RIDE

Anyone who thinks the ingenuity of youth is on the wane need look no further than this recent site in Little Malop St.

A trio of teenagers – or “eshays” as one more youthful WTF scribe labelled them – weren’t keen to pound the pavement to their next destination (which we believe was 100m west at the corner of Moorabool St).

In fairness, the truck was travelling at little more than walking pace, the driver perhaps aware they had collected an extra load or three.

TRAILER TRASH

Is your street turning into a parking lot for cars, boats and caravans?

You can now add old trailers, a WTF correspondent reports, like this one in Prospect Rd, Newtown.

Just metres from busy Pakington St, it’s been there for months and has created a “nuisance” obstacle for speeding drivers on the school run.

The hazard was reported to the council weeks ago, but it still sits there, a crash statistic waiting to happen.

We’re reliably informed that just out of the picture, on the opposite side of the street, is a camper van.

It too has been enjoying weeks-long free parking.

BEV’S BAN

Geelong-based Liberal MLC Bev McArthur has been given a slap on the wrist for her role in a parcel containing cow manure landing on the doorstep on Premier Jacinta Allan’s office.

The stinky budget day stunt has seen McArthur banned from bringing guests into Parliament House until the end of June, according to a report from our colleagues up the highway.

The incident, referred to the parliament’s privileges committee, was part of a protest against the government’s emergency services levy.

While some saw the funny side, the premier certainly didn’t, labelling it a “significant breach of community expectations”.

McArthur defended her actions at the time, claiming it was the only way regional Victorians could get a message to Labor.

“Labor MPs are acting like they’ve never seen cow s--t before – maybe they don’t get out of Melbourne much?” she said.

We note that the parcel was nothing compared to the massive pile of horse manure that was dumped by climate activists at the Adelaide office of former federal minister Simon Birmingham, who in turn offered the “gift” to any gardeners wanting free fertiliser.
