The identity of a woman who drowned at a popular Surf Coast beach on Saturday has been revealed.

Emergency services raced to Jan Juc beach at about 1pm on Saturday, before the woman’s body was pulled from waters near the surf lifesaving club.

It’s understood she was swimming near rocks at the eastern end of the beach, a stretch not easily visible from nearby carparks and developed areas.

On Sunday, police confirmed the woman had been identified as a 49-year-old from New South Wales.

Her death is not being treated as suspicious.

The tragedy comes as thousands have descended on Torquay for the Anzac Day long weekend and annual Rip Curl Pro surf competition at nearby Bells Beach.

It also comes days after patrols by the Jan Juc Life Saving Club finish for the summer season on Easter Monday.

There were large waves and onshore winds on Saturday and ocean conditions were quite turbulent.

The eastern end of Jan Juc beach is a rocky stretch with sand and outcrops of reef, which are often concealed by the water.

That part of the beach is also typically less crowded than other areas and is frequented by dog walkers, fisherman and surfers.

The tragedy comes just a day after a man died after being swept off the rocks near Cape Schanck on the Mornington Peninsula.

This Easter in Australia was declared the deadliest Easter long weekend on record, with seven people drowning at beaches across Victoria and NSW.

A 58-year-old man was washed off a breakwall at Wollongong harbour on Good Friday, before three Chinese nationals were swept into the sea at San Remo beach near Phillip Island.

One woman was rescued, but another woman was unable to be revived and the search for her husband’s body was called off on Easter Monday.

Drownings followed in Tathra, Wattamolla and the Mid North Coast, all in NSW.

Earlier this month, a 52-year-old Newtown man drowned after his leg-rope was caught on rocks at Thirteenth Beach on April 10.
