A Leopold woman is asking for speed humps in her street after the tragic death of her dog, who was “like a family member” to her.

Shae Khan and her fiancee Toby McKay’s dog Princess was hit and killed outside their Northview Drive home on Friday morning last week, just after 9.30am.

Ms Khan said she was inside getting ready for the day, when her two-year-old son spotted the maltese shih tzu and her puppy across the street.

“I ran outside the gate and in the corner of my left eye I saw this red ute going so fast,” she said.

“I thought, ‘He’s going too fast, he’s going to clean them up if they run to me’.

“I ran towards the car yelling and waving my hands to say stop.

“He was going too fast to even notice me.”

The two little dogs ran under the car, she said.

Mr Khan said when the ute braked for the dogs, it was going so fast the wheelbarrow in the car’s tray flew forwards and smashed the back windscreen.

“The guy stopped but failed to assist us… he could have given his details too but left and hasn’t returned to see us or have any heart to ask how the dog is,” she said.

The smaller pup made it out unscathed but Princess didn’t make it to the vet.

“It was so traumatic,” Ms Khan said.

“I can’t get it out of my head.”

Ms Khan said she had in the past lost four family members in one car accident, and losing Princess now made her previous familial losses all the more painful.

“I will never get over that but I had just learnt to find some happiness when I met Toby and we have this amazing life and family we created together,” she said.

“Now someone has taken one of my family (members) away again.”

Ms Khan said she had contacted council last year to ask for speed bumps to be put in, as she felt it was dangerous how fast cars drove down that street.

“Cars fly down on this road,” Ms Khan said.

“But now I have a two year old son and we don’t have a front fence.

“I feel terrified living (here).”

Geelong council executive director city infrastructure James Stirton said data collected during August 2023, in response to a customer’s request, indicated that most drivers were complying with speed limits and the volume of traffic was acceptable for the type of road.

“We extend our sympathies to the community member who has lost her dog and we encourage any residents who witness hoon driving behaviour to report it to Victoria Police,” he said.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said police were looking into an incident where a dog was hit by a car on Northview Drive on Friday last week.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
