Houses from across the region are lighting up Geelong with their festive displays and decorations to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year.

A local 12-year-old boy has been busy over the last three weeks decorating his family home for the Christmas season.

Tom, from Hamlyn Heights, said his display started seven years ago with a little reindeer in the front window and has grown to thousands of dazzling lights - with candy canes lining the path and tinsel and multiple Santa statues placed in the driveway.

“Ever since I was very young, we would go looking at Christmas light displays ... then I thought ‘why don’t we start our own display?’,” he said.

“Every year we have been adding a little something extra and it continues to grow.”

Tom said he loves seeing the smiles of people’s faces when they see his display and that locals should drive by his house because “it will put a smile on your face, both young and old”.

“It will help to spread Christmas cheer around Geelong,” he said.

Tom has been mentored by Geelong’s Christmas light expert Bryson West to create his impressive display.

He said Mr West has given him many ideas for his own display and “has been a good inspiration”.

“I’ve been going to his Christmas display for the past five years and have always admired it,” Tom said.

For 20 years, Mr West has been decorating his family home with thousands of lights, decorations and Santa statues.

Unfortunely, this year Mr West will not be lighting up his Geelong West home in Pizer St due to a change in his family situation.

“It will definitely be back in 2023 in some form, whether at Pizer St or at another location,” he said.

Mr West’s house has won best Christmas light display in Victoria in 2021 and best display in Geelong for five consecutive years, raising thousands of dollars for motor neurone disease in the process.
