One of Victoria’s most popular beachside holiday locations has made a bold call about how it will celebrate New Year’s Eve, deciding to scrap a much loved tradition.

One of Victoria’s most popular beachside holiday locations has made a bold call about how it will celebrate New Year’s Eve, opting to scrap a much loved and traditional event.

Surf Coast Shire general manager Chris Pike has announced that Lorne’s fireworks would not return on the last day of the year after a two-year absence due to the pandemic, citing soaring costs.

It’s estimated the display would require around $50,000 a year to bring back.

“The rising costs for this brief event – which include security, fencing, lighting and medical resources – are a challenge with so many other financial pressures,” he said.

Instead, the council will focus on prioritising tourism and events “that encourage people to stay longer and appreciate and care for the Surf Coast”, according to Mr Pike.

Lorne is one of the state’s most popular coastal town’s during the festive period.

The coastal town’s Swing Bridge was illuminated earlier this year to mark the 150th anniversary naming of Lorne, and they hosted the Amy’s Gran Fondo and Great Ocean Road Running Festival.

“Coinciding with the Lorne Sculpture Biennale, the swing bridge lighting was one of a number of events that Council assisted to support Lorne’s economy and vitality,” Mr Pike said.

“This focus on events that bring year-round benefits to the town will continue into 2023.”
