A Geelong woman grabbed a kitchen knife and threatened to cut her own mother’s throat if she called police for help, a court has heard.

After sending threatening text messages over the course of a month, Ashley Boros, 23, was verbally abusing her mother in their Ocean Grove home when the terrifying incident with the knife took place.

Boros pleaded guilty to making threats to inflict serious injury and making threats to destroy property, as well as theft and driving while suspended charges in the Geelong Magistrates Court on Monday morning.

In July and August 2021, Boros sent several threatening messages to her mother, including telling her she would make sure her mother “touched the bottom of her grave early” and to wait and “see how scary I will be” if her mother continued to argue with her.

Boros also threatened to smash her mother’s car and attempted to throw objects into the house before she was stopped by her partner.

At one point, a family friend visited the home and had to take Boros’ mother into emergency accommodation after another dispute.

Boros also faced court for stealing $35.55 worth of petrol from a Corio service station and for driving while suspended.

Her defence lawyer, Hollie Lyons, said Boros has drug and substance-abuse issues and struggled with methamphetamine use before she was placed into custody on remand for these matters.

Ms Lyons said it was “pretty clear we’re dealing with someone who (has a) very complex mental health presentation” and asked the court to consider linking her with community-based services.

She said Boros was now struggling with homelessness and it should be “all about stability from here on”.

“She needs to have someone very closely looking after her,” Ms Lyons told the court.

Magistrate Ann McGarvie agreed to have Boros assessed for a community corrections order.

Boros will return next week for sentencing.
