An Armstrong Creek sex offender who was allegedly found with more than 700 child abuse photos told police his “brain is wired wrong”.

Liam Joseph Dalton allegedly handed over a USB stick full of child abuse material from his tracksuit pocket when officers executed a search warrant on his Armstrong Creek home in May.

Mr Dalton, who indicated he would plead guilty but would first be seeking legal advice, faced the Geelong Magistrates Court on Friday on charges of possessing category one and category three child abuse material and for breaching sex offender-related conditions.

Mr Dalton allegedly admitted he downloaded some of the material just days earlier from Tor, a browser used to access the dark web.

On the USB stick, police allegedly found 200 photographs and 20 videos depicting male children between the ages of 10 and 12.

They also allegedly found a further 508 images on other devices.

The alleged material was listed as category one – which depicted male children under 13 in provocative poses and completing sexual acts, and category three – which included children in their underwear.

When confronted by police, Mr Dalton allegedly told them he “fights with it” and there “is some wiring in my brain wired up wrong”.

As part of the sex offender registry conditions, Mr Dalton is required to inform authorities about any lifestyle or career changes.

The court heard he allegedly failed to tell the chief of police that he had stopped working for a former employer.

Mr Dalton, who appeared self-represented on Friday, told Magistrate Peter Mellas he needed more time to get psychiatric material to the court and to talk to a lawyer.

Mr Mellas told him that he has been before the court on similar charges before so he should “understand exactly what needs to be done to prepare for this hearing”.

Explaining why he was not prepared, Mr Dalton said he “hasn’t been coping well … certainly leading up to today”.

“I’m not proud of myself, in every respect,” Mr Dalton said.

Mr Dalton has been given until the end of February 2023.
