A Geelong man with a history of putting police in danger on local roads is facing a lengthy jail sentence for attempting to ram into officers at dangerous speeds.

Jacob Timpany, 23, forced police to drive onto the nature strip to avoid being hit as he drove onto the wrong side of the road and travelled towards them at high speeds in Corio earlier this year.

Timpany faced the Geelong Magistrates Court on Friday and pleaded guilty to a slew of driving offences, including recklessly exposing police to risk by driving, and possessing methamphetamine.

After almost hitting officers along Purnell Rd, Timpany was located on Cox Rd where he was fishtailing from the fast speeds.

Police tried to stop him but Timpany swerved onto the wrong side of the road a number of times and sped away.

At one point during the chase, Timpany braked heavily, lost traction, fishtailed his car and slid sideways on the road.

Officers attempted to hit his car to disable it but he accelerated heavily and forced his car to move past them.

They found his car parked in the area as Timpany tried to escape in a second car driven by a female associate.

Timpany was arrested and a search of his car uncovered methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.

His barrister, Lilian Dubroja, said he had a “very socially deprived upbringing” which included parents who were “severe drug addicts … neglect and (being exposed) to family violence”.

“There is essentially a number of personality features and underlying mental health issues that contribute to the offending,” she said.

Ms Dubroja told the court Timpany was jailed on similar offending in the past and now risks becoming institutionalised.

Prosecutor Craig Williams asked Magistrate Simon Guthrie to send him to prison.

“Not only were police placed at risk of injury, but anyone else who was using the road at the time certainly would have been placed in danger,” Mr Williams said.

Mr Guthrie said Timpany was “a danger”.

He adjourned the matter until later this month to allow for Timpany to be assessed for a community corrections order as an “alternative option” to a possible straight jail sentence.
