OUTRAGED Newcastle fans of Childish Gambino booed the American rapper off stage at a gig last night and have called on the venue for a refund after claiming they were misled.
Billed as the main act at Newcastle pub The Cambridge Hotel, Gambino - who also goes by the name Donald Glover and starred in the hit sitcom Community - only made a brief appearance during the night.
Instead the packed crowd, who are believed to have forked out about $70 for the concert - were entertained by rap group Royalty who had been billed as the support act to Gambino.
While Gambino is set to make a number of guest DJ appearances at the Listen Out festivals in Sydney and Brisbane this weekend, the Cambridge Hotel insists the Newcastle gig was meant to be an intimate concert and said in a Facebook post they were disappointed in the star’s behaviour.
“To everyone who came to see Childish Gambino show last night we are as disappointed as all of you,” the statement read.
BONNIE AND CLYDE LOVERS CAUGHT IN COMMODORE
“We had the opportunity to present Childish Gambino to Newcastle in an intimate gig and we jumped at the chance as we aim to bring the best possible acts to Newcastle for music lovers. As seen last night, unfortunately we have no control over the acts performance once on stage.”
But many fans weren’t buying the line, claiming they had been deliberately mislead into thinking Gambino would be the featured act when the promoters knew wouldn’t be.
“You guys should be ashamed of yourselves. How did you think you were going to get away with misadvertising Childish Gambino as the headliner and people weren’t going to get pissed off???” Natasha Kennedy wrote on the venue’s Facebook page.
“The poor guy was booed off stage because of you and did nothing wrong. You owe everyone a refund. And you owe Gambino an apology.”
“You know what, this is a cop out. What kind of establishment doesn’t know what kind of performance they’re going to get?” wrote Kate Broomfield.
Promoter Big Apachee also took to Facebook to express disappointment in Gambino’s behaviour and also claimed they were expecting him to be the main event.
“Big Apachee, Bigtix and The Cambridge Hotel are all incredibly disappointed in the outcome of last nights show. We all worked very hard in booking a great act for a great venue and unfortunately the act did not deliver on what was billed,” the statement read.
“We were very excited to bring such a great act to Newcastle and it is unfortunate that we cannot control the acts performance once on stage. “
It is not yet known if any refunds will be provided to fans.
