Ex-AFL player Jonathan Simpkin escapes suspension after accepting early plea for charging

A Hawthorn premiership player has continued to shine for his hometown club, and the evergreen star is free to play after an incident involving a St Joseph’s midfielder.

Former AFL player Jonathan Simpkin has escaped suspension for charging St Joseph’s star James Gow.

The ageing Colac star’s hit on Gow in the second quarter of the Tigers’ upset win was deemed intentional conduct and low impact a Simpkin accepted a reprimand, which reduced the sanction from one-week to a reprimand for the ex-Hawthorn premiership player.

The 37-year-old, who played 41 games for Geelong, Hawthorn and Essendon, has continued to shine for his hometown club Colac this season, kicking 30 goals in 12 matches up forward.

Modewarre veteran Ryan Williams also accepted an reprimand after he entered an early plea for striking Queenscliff’s Caleb Whitley.

The AFL Barwon match review panel assessed that there was no reportable incident for Corio gun Joel Bennett for coming into contact with Bannockburn’s runner.

Colac Josh Garner’s umpire contact incident was also thrown out.
