Shocking video footage obtained by The Mercury shows an e-scooter hooligan joy riding through Kmart at the New Town Plaza Shopping Centre.
The footage was filmed at 2am on December 22, five days after the e-scooter trial was introduced in Tasmania.
The video shows stunned shoppers turning to look at the Beam e-scooter rider, one of whom asks “what are you doing?” as he rides past.
This is not the first example of e-scooter hooliganism since the vehicles came to Hobart on December 17.
Around midnight of December 17 a young man was caught on CCTV footage riding an e-scooter down the roof and window of a parked car near the Hobart waterfront.
Several other e-scooters have been dumped in the rivulet, strewn across the road, and topped across the footpath.
On Saturday an e-scooter rider accidentally crashed into an elderly woman who was leaving the doorway of a cafe on Sandy Bay Road.
The man was wearing a helmet, but did not have it fastened to his head at the time of the crash.
A Beam spokesperson said they were working to ensure e-scooter riders did the right thing.
“Beam has the best shared e-mobility safety record in Australia, and we are committed to continuing this,” the spokesperson said.
“Should any incidents occur, we work closely with the police to identify these individuals, to ensure that the actions of a few don’t ruin a good experience for others.”
The Mercury have reached out to the New Town Plaza Shopping Centre and Tasmania Police for comment.
