POPULAR Top End camping and swimming attraction, Tjuwaliyn Douglas Daly Hot Springs will not open this Dry due to negotiations over the land lease.

The attraction, located between Darwin and Katherine, was closed in 2019 because of ‘significant water issues’.

A Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security spokeswoman said the government and Traditional Owners were in negotiations around the land where the hot springs are located.

“Tjuwaliyn (Douglas Daly Hot Springs) is subject to finalisation of an ongoing Land Claim that covers Tjuwaliyn and Umbrawarra Gorge,” they said.

“Until the terms of Joint Management have been settled, investment into necessary new infrastructure to allow Tjuwaliyn to open is not able to proceed.

“It is expected that Tjuwaliyn will open in 2023 however the terms of opening are still under negotiation with Traditional Owners.”

The Northern Land Council said in a statement that they are “providing the Traditional Owners with legal advice and representation in respect of the water supply issues at Tjuwaliyn.”

Meanwhile, new campgrounds are available for visitors travelling to Litchfield National Park.

The Park has 32 different campsites across three new campgrounds and provides drop toilets and an information shelter.

The Litchfield campgrounds, which is located around 120km south of Darwin, is accessible by four-wheeled-drive vehicles only.

The Territory’s renowned swimming hole Berry Springs is open during the Dry season.
