DREAMS of a hiking experience in the Watarrka National Park will become a reality after the NT government selected a developer for the project.
The multi-day track will be located 330km southeast of Alice Springs and the government said it had co-funded $5.6m towards the project. Negotiations will now be held with Traditional Owners.
Australian Walking Company has been appointed to design, develop and operate the track.
The company’s executive director, Neil Lynch, said the project would take into consideration the wishes of Traditional Owners.
“The new walk will deliver job opportunities for Traditional Owners and their communities while providing guests with the opportunity to be immersed, educated and guided safely through areas like Kings Canyon,” Mr Lynch said.
“Operating walks in national parks comes with the responsibility of safeguarding the natural wilderness and we are excited to have the special privilege of showcasing this outstanding walking track in the Northern Territory.”
