Two teenagers have been injured after an alleged hoon driver lost control and ploughed into a group of people on the northern Gold Coast.
Emergency services were called to the intersection of Beattie Rd and Waterway Dr in Coomera just before 9am on Sunday.
A Gold Coast police spokesman said a dark BMW was leaving a car meet when it lost control and struck a group who were sitting on a barrier.
A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman confirmed an 18-year-old man had sustained a life-threatening leg injury and was in a critical condition.
Another male in his late teens also suffered a leg injury and was in a stable condition.
Both were assessed by paramedics at the scene before being rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital.
“Officers spoke with the driver, a 20-year-old man, at the scene who continues to assist police with their inquiries,” a police spokesman said.
The car meet, billed as an opportunity to “enjoy some beautiful machines on display”, was organised to raise funds for a local woman facing a health battle.
Espresso TWENTY5, which hosted the gathering, took to social media just hours after the incident to announce it would not organise any more events until further notice.
“Unfortunately after an incident that happened this morning with one absolute idiot hooning leaving our event we will no longer be hosting events at our cafe until further notice,” a post to Instagram read.
“At no point do we encourage or tolerate any behaviour that one puts other people at risk.
“Due to this incident, it is with a heavy heart that we cannot host these events until further notice.
“Our events are for the community and vehicle enthusiasts and we deeply apologise to each of you that love these events and treat each other and the venue with respect and we hope to be able to get back to hosting events.
“We wish everyone involved in this incident a speedy recovery and apologies for the poor actions and decisions of the individual responsible.”
Detectives from the Forensic Crash Unit are investigating the incident.
The intersection where the crash took place is in the heart of the Coomera Marine precinct, which is home to boat-makers Rivera and Maritimo, as well as The Boat Works.
It comes just hours after an unrelated incident in which a man was left in a critical condition after being hit by a car at Hollywell in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information is urged to contact police on 131 444.
