A man has been charged after he allegedly ran over another male on the Gold Coast, leaving him fighting for life.

Gold Coast police Superintendent Brett Jackson said a male ute driver dropped off two females at a residence on Cattleya St in Hollywell about 1am on Sunday.

“Another male then exited the residence and approached the driver,” he said.

“We’ve received information that the male who exited the house had a gardening implement, we believe it was a garden rake or something of a similar nature.”

Superintendent Jackson said the driver then drove directly at the other male as he approached the vehicle, colliding with him and trapping him under the vehicle before fleeing the scene.

The victim, a 20-year-old man from Hollywell, sustained critical head injuries and was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital.

Superintendent Jackson said he has since undergone surgery.

The driver, a 23-year-old man from Runaway Bay, was located by police a short time later.

He has since been charged with acts intended to cause grevious bodily harm and fronted Southport Magistrates Court on Monday.

“Police will investigate if any threats were made (by the victim) and will canvas the area for CCTV footage to piece together what happened,” Superintendent Jackson said.

“We believe all parties were known to each other.

“The females were not injured but are quite shaken.”

Superintendent Jackson confirmed the ute had also been seized and would undergo testing by the Forensic Crash Unit.
