Cinematic rescue: Man in hospital after scaling cliff near Darwin film screening

As a special gala screening was about to start at the Deckchair Cinema, emergency services were called to a man stuck on a nearby cliff. Read how the dramatic incident played out.

Croc spotted lurking at Deckchair Cinema, Darwin

A young man was sent to hospital after he climbed over a fence and fell down a cliff face near the Deckchair Cinema on Friday evening.

It’s the third fall in the area over the past few weeks.

Emergency services including police, paramedics and fireys received the call at 6.58pm, just minutes before the Darwin International Film Festival started its ‘Special Gala Screening’.

St John NT operations manager Craig Garraway told ABC radio on Monday he was not sure why the 24-year-old attempted to traverse the treacherous area beyond the Esplanade fence.

“Paramedics arrived (and) we worked with NT Police, Fire and Emergency Services to get the gentleman back up but he was able to make his own way up,” Mr Garraway said.

“He did have an injury to his knee, the injury there was treated by paramedics.

“We’re not sure why he climbed over the fence or fell down there.

“He was taken off to (Royal Darwin) Hospital where he’s making a full recovery.”

The man remains in hospital in a stable condition.

In the past two months, at least three people have ended up in hospital after falling down the cliff along the Darwin Esplanade.

There were two incidents in three days in early August while a man suffered “substantial head injuries” after a fall in mid September.

All three incidents involved men in their 30s.

In 2020, a man, 30, died after a serious fall from a cliff in the same area.

Some parts of the Esplanade’s coastline have a sheer drop from a significant height, but these sections are fenced off and have warning signs.
