Charlise Mutten’s alleged killer Justin Stein inundated with online abuse

Little Charlise Mutten was allegedly shot dead by her stepdad with a small calibre rifle.

The emergence about how the poor girl was allegedly killed raised more questions on Tuesday, with police also revealing despite spending ten days scouring the remote Mt Wilson property where she and Justin Stein were staying they still do not know exactly where she died.

The nine-year-old’s cause of death was revealed after an autopsy.

Police have not discovered any blood, gunshot residue or weapon inside the luxury Wildenstein wedding venue.

Homicide Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty, said investigators were still trying to piece together what happened in the harrowing final moments of her life.

“That’s how she died, so we’re disclosing this for investigative reasons but also to clear up any ambiguity to make sure we have some clarity for the investigation and any other thoughts that this may not be anything but what this is — an alleged murder of a nine-year-old girl,” Det Supt Doherty said.

Police confirmed to The Daily Telegraph that Stein, 31, does not have a gun licence.

Det Supt Doherty confirmed The Daily Telegraph’s report that Charlise’s mother Kallista was not at the Mt Wilson property last Tuesday.

Instead, she was staying at a caravan park with friends in Lower Portland, leaving Stein and Charlise alone more than an hour away back at Mt Wilson.

Police sources said with Ms Mutten having now been formally interviewed, so too were the friends she had spent time with in the caravan.

Detectives have released CCTV footage and information detailing Stein’s alleged movements in the hours before Charlise’s body was dumped on the banks of the Colo River.

On Thursday, January 13 police allege a red Holden Colorado Ute towing a boat was driven by Stein around north west Sydney.

At 5.53pm that day he allegedly visited BP at Marsden Park, before next being seen travelling along Victoria Rd and Bayswater Rd at Drummoyne at 7.19pm to 7.20pm.

Police allege he spent between 7.20pm and 9.50pm at the Five Dock boat ramp, where he was unable to start his boat.

In the early hours of Friday morning Stein was allegedly captured on CCTV between 1.30am and 1.40am at the Windsor boat ramp in Windsor, between 2.25am and 2.35am at the Colo River jetty, when it is alleged he dumped Charlise’s body.

He then allegedly travelled along Lower Colo Road, before moving onto the Bells Line of Road, which is back in the direction of Mt Wilson.

Det Supt Doherty said it would be alleged Stein had killed Charlise at the Mt Wilson property almost two days earlier, either late on Tuesday, January 11 or in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

He is appealing for anybody who may have CCTV or dashcam footage, or remembers seeing the Ute and boat at the “unusual” time of the day, to contact police.

“These timings and locations, especially in the early hours of the morning, would have been unusual,” he said.

“People may have remembered the suspicious activity and it’s really important to help investigators in this matter. There’s gaps there and that’s why it’s important for us to get information from the public.”

Police interviewed Charlise’s mother Kallista last Friday, after she spent much of the week following her daughter’s disappearance in hospital.

Det Supt Doherty said there was no suggestion she had in any way been involved in the death of Charlise.

“I can now say that Charlise’s mother Kallista has been reinterviewed, she provided a formal statement last Friday. She is in alternative accommodation after leaving medical car,” Det Supt Doherty said.

“There is no information or evidence that puts her at the property at the time of the murder.

“We’re highly motivated because we’re working on behalf of Charlise. You don’t get much more motivation than the alleged murder of a nine-year-old girl.”
