From swing dancing and finger snapping to vibing under the winter sunshine, there will be something for everyone at the Munro Martin Parkland Jazz Picnic this weekend.
The event will feature four Australian jazz bands, including local talent Mike Rivett and Australian jazz heavyweight Vince Jones, who will unveil new tracks on Sunday, June 8.
Mr Jones, who will take the stage with his band, The Vince Jones Quintet, said he was looking forward to treating the Cairns audience to some new music.
“(The performance) will be a cross section of our old stuff … and some new,” Mr Jones said.
“We’ve got a new CD we’re in the middle or working on, so … we’ve got all new songs and will be playing some tracks off that.”
Mr Jones said he was looking forward to “sharing the bill” with the Emma Pask Trio, Cookin’ on 3 Burners and Mike Rivett.
“This’ll be good fun,” he said. “We’re not actually playing together, but we’ll enjoy listening to them on stage … and there’s a good cross section of music so (audiences) will enjoy the music and we’ll enjoy playing.”
Mr Jones said he was looking forward to coming back to Cairns following his last show at the Tanks Arts Centre in 2023.
“That show did well too, although my flight was late and I got in just in time to get on stage,” he said.
“It’s such a buzz to go up there and play. I’m looking forward to it. I like playing outdoors for the mums and dad and kids to come along, dance and have a bit of fun.”
While gourmet hampers, food vans and cold drinks will be available on the day, attendees are encouraged to bring their own blankets and picnics.
Tickets for the Jazz Picnic are available via Ticketlink.
