Celebrating 50 years of Bohemian Rhapsody, tribute band Queen: It’s A Kinda Magic will rock the stage at the Cairns Performing Arts Centre on June 7.
Lead singer Warren Vernon-Driscoll, who performs as Freddie Mercury, said the one-night-only show would celebrate the band’s greatest hits.
“We’ve taken the 1986 Wembley show and used that as a blueprint for this show, and over the years it’s kind of changed into its own thing,” Mr Vernon-Driscoll said.
“We’ve added songs to the set list that they necessarily didn’t get to do live … and we feel it’s a unique balance of music that we’re excited to share that with everyone.”
Mr Vernon-Driscoll will be joined by bandmates Rusty Red as Brian May and Aussies Ben Harper as Roger Taylor and Miles Green as John Deacon.
“Most of us are obsessed with our posts,” he said.
“Rusty knows Brian May like the back of his hand, so he plays, like, exactly like him, and everyone’s got their own link to Queen, which we bring that to the stage and makes the show special.”
While Bohemian Rhapsody remains a fan-favourite, Mr Vernon-Driscoll, who was introduced to the band by his father, said his love for the band began when he discovered the song Somebody to Love.
“I started singing the song Somebody to Love quite a bit, and as I got older, I realised how challenging the music was and I wanted to sing more of it,” he said.
“And it just so happened that we ended up doing this tribute together, and it’s great.”
The seasoned performer said being able to perform Queen’s hits live was “life-changing”.
“The show is amazing because we’ve got all the same costumes, the lighting,” he said.
“Rusty Red uses Brian May’s Red special (guitar), an identical copy of that, so we try to get as close as possible to seeing the real Queen as you can.”
