A VIOLENT altercation at sea has ended with the remote arrest of a Cairns man in the Gulf of Carpentaria.

Karumba and Normanton police on Sunday charged a 27-year-old Parramatta Park man with grievous bodily harm following an alleged stabbing on board a prawn trawler in the Gulf of Carpentaria on Saturday.

The skipper of a prawn trawler fishing Gulf waters called police after a verbal argument between two crew members escalated and turned violent.

A 27-year-old Western Australian man sustained significant laceration to the arm after allegedly being stabbed by the Cairns man.

The alleged offender was restrained by other crew members until police from Karumba, detectives from Normanton and paramedics aboard a Volunteer Marine Rescue vessel could reach the trawler.

Police said the man was arrested and placed under guard before being ferried back to the Karumba boat ramp along with the injured man.

The trip took six hours in total.

Normanton detectives charged the man with one count of grievous bodily harm and he was remanded in custody ahead of an appearance in Normanton Magistrates Court on Monday.
