Cairns welcomes international and domestic travellers

INTERNATIONAL flights are stepping up this winter as Cairns prepares for the peak European travel season.

Singapore Airlines will begin operating out of Cairns Airport five times per week from today as Aussies head overseas and the hopes of a new wave of backpackers hits FNQ.

Cairns Airport CEO Richard Barker said it has been clear since Singapore Airlines launched their Cairns services in March that the airline wanted to increase its frequency.

“We are delighted to see an additional two Singapore Airlines services starting this week in anticipation of the peak summer travel period in Europe,” he said.

Singapore Airlines spokesperson Karl Schubert said growth in demand for travel to Cairns had been driven by two main groups.

“Cairns is the gateway to one of Australia’s most well-known holiday destinations … and travel to Cairns has been driven in large part by the leisure market, especially travellers originating from Europe,” he said.

“However, corporate travel as well as the continued desire for family and friends to reconnect are also playing a part in supporting the growth we’re seeing.”

A Cairns Airport spokesperson said Singapore Airlines had indicated a very strong travel period between Cairns and Singapore for the month of June.

“It was always going to be interesting to see how the market responded to stepping up flights because it is generally acknowledged that the return of tourists has been slower than anticipated,” they said.

“But Singapore Airlines have been well-used by the local community here in Cairns and it is looking very positive with the increased frequency of international flights, especially as it leads up to the return of New Zealand and Japan flights in July.”

The international terminal has sat idle for the past two years but a spokesperson confirmed there is a refurbishment plan in place.

“There’s a program of works being finalised to reinvigorate the terminal and ensure it’s fit for its purpose as a welcoming facility to our travellers.”
