THE international terminal at Cairns Airport will soon be buzzing again with 24 services expected to operate in the coming months.

Cairns Airport CEO Richard Barker said return flights to Bali with Jetstar would start early May. They are expected to operate three times per week from May 3.

“We are extremely pleased that international travel is a reality once again,” Mr Barker said.

“It’s been great seeing Singapore Airlines operating three services per week into the region, which will increase to five weekly services from late May as we head into our peak season, and we regain the confidence of overseas visitors.”

International flight schedules are subject to change but as it stands Jetstar flights to Japan will start on June 1. Flights to Tokyo will operate six times a week with four flights per week scheduled to Japan’s second biggest city Osaka.

Over the coming months more countries are scheduled to return to Cairns. New Zealand’s borders to Australia opened at midnight on Wednesday, April 13.

“Services to Auckland with Air New Zealand are expected to commence in early July, just in time for peak New Zealand snow season,” he said.

“These services will operate year-round.” The date for New Zealand flights is currently set for July 5 three times weekly.

Air Niugini flights to Port Moresby have already started with three return services a week.

“The Australian Government lifted the embargo on passengers travelling direct from Papua New Guinea to Cairns on March 31,” he said.

The flights are expected to keep the International terminal busy.

By July, we are expecting to have 24 international services operating out of Cairns per week to Singapore, Bali, Japan, Auckland and Port Moresby,” Mr Barker said.

While this is the beginning of direct international flights into Cairns, it could set the trend for other airlines to dip their toe into the Australian market.

Tropical Tourism North Queensland CEO Mark Olsen said Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef has always been well sought after.

“There’s a really strong demand coming out of Europe and the UK, two of our biggest markets into Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef,” he said.
