Collection of on-road oddities and troppo transport options in FNQ
From a kid towing a boat behind an e-scooter to a go-kart on the main drag of a Tablelands town, the Far North has no shortage of on-road oddities when you just have to get there. See the hilarious list and watch the video of a wheelie bin biker.
Cairns
Don't miss out on the headlines from Cairns. Followed categories will be added to My News.
When you have to get there no matter what, sometimes common sense, practicality and safety go out the window.
Over the years we’ve seen some interesting things on Far North roads; some funny, some are straight out crazy, and all listed below are pretty hairbrained.
From strapping a cow to a box trailer to a kid towing a boat behind an e-scooter there’s no shortage of on-road oddities when it comes to unconventional Far North ways to get from A to B.
The following is a sample but no way an exhaustive list of the unorthodox ways people get around in Far North Queensland.
GO-KART ON ROAD
This kid snapped on the Atherton Tablelands all decked out in his go-kart racing gear clearly couldn’t wait to get to the track and decided to blat around the streets of Mareeba instead. Probably not the safest or most legal way to hone race skills but when you have a need for speed …
BIN ON MOTORBIKE
Cruising down the Bruce Highway near White Rock in June 2021, this guy clearly had no other option but to bust out the occy strap and lash a decent sized wheelie bin to the back of his Yamaha MT.
Using his left arm to keep the bin in place we have no idea how he changed gears without his clutch hand.
But we do know this legend gave us a good chuckle.
BUGGY TOWING SUITCASES
What even is this thing?
Part motorised wheelchair, part scooter, this pair clearly had a plane to catch and no other way of getting to the airport.
Spotted on the streets of Cairns in January, here’s hoping they got to the airport in one piece and with their luggage intact.
LOP-SIDED MOTORBIKE
Clearly when this bloke was out to lunch when instruction was given about how to pack a motorcycle.
Spotted heading past Edmonton on the Bruce Highway last month, this guy’s gear is literally almost falling off the bike in an awesome display of wonkiness.
BOAT TOW ON SCOOTER
This kid takes the cake for caring less.
A Yorkeys Knob resident who took these photos was stunned to see the child on an e-scooter towing a boat down Varley St in April this year.
Fish must have been biting in a big way.
Lets hope cops who were contacted saw the funny side as we all did.
SUBURBAN PARKING METER
In 2021 a truly weird situation unfolded in a suburban Cairns street with an unsanctioned parking meter cemented into the ground in an apparent bid to discourage cars from stopping.
Motorists leaving their cars in the area at Golf St had previously received handwritten letters on their windshields telling them to stop parking there.
